Strategies for developing effective presentation skills!!

http://www.asiapacific.edu/
Delivering a presentation can be difficult, exciting, energy-draining, fun, or all four together. The ability to give a persuasive presentation is a tremendous career booster for a person. Presentation can be defined as a formal event characterized by teamwork and use of audio-visual aids. The main purpose of presentation is to give information, to persuade the audience to act and to create goodwill. A good presentation should have a good subject matter, should match with the objective, should best fit the audience, and should be well organized. Some of the key essential points that a person must kept in mind before giving a presentation are:
1.     Preparation is the most important thing you can do before a presentation in order to do a good job during the presentation. The speaker must plan how to begin the presentation, what to speak in the middle of presentation and how to end the presentation without losing audience interests at any point of time.
2.     Rehearse and practice the presentation. This will help the speaker to be more confident and self-assured. The more the speaker rehearses the better the presentation turns to be. Communicate ideas and facts verbally in a clear and organized way. Adjusts style, tone, and level of verbal communication to fit the audience and situation.
3.     A detailed audience analysis must be made before the presentation, i.e., an analysis of the needs, age, educational background, language, and culture of the target audience. Their body language instantly gives the speaker the required feedback.
4.     A good presentation should be concise and focused on the topic and should have the potential to convey the required information. It should not move off-track.
5.     To communicate the desired information, the speaker should use more of visual aids such as transparencies, diagrams, pictures, charts, etc. Each transparency or slide should contain limited and essential information only and no slide should be kept on for a longer time. Organize all the visuals for making a logical and sound presentation.
6.     The speaker should encourage more questions from the audience. He should be honest enough to answer those questions. If any biased question is put forth by the audience, rearticulate it before answering. Summarize the presentation at the end and give final comments.

Campus Placements: The Truth of the Situation.

Many B-schools become lenient toward their admission criteria while admitting students for their PGDM or MBA courses. The logic behind this choice is that the atmosphere at college, the peer group learning, the teachers and the experts will transform the student. Little they realize the truth of an old proverb that ‘you can take a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink it’. Consequentially, these seemingly good B-schools get good companies coming to their campuses but can’t get the 100 percent placement. The biggest huddle is the not the academics but the attitude of the students.

Once admitted to a good MBA college, students start thinking that they are entitled for a wonderful career and hefty pay package without realizing the responsibility they have to shoulder in order to get to this dream of great job. Their attitude toward the course work, assignments and overall learning becomes careless. This not only becomes a cause of degradation in their skill set but it also stops them in learning new things.
As a student one should realize that a MBA college can give you opportunities of learning, growth and a good career in the form of course work, teachers and job interviews. But utilizing those opportunities for your betterment is your responsibilities. The dream jobs even at the best b-schools in India require extra-ordinary efforts. Students have to put in their heart & soul in improving and refining themselves. Very few people get this kind of opportunity of growth and if you are amongst them, please make its full use by your dedication, hard work, sincerity and discipline.

How to crack Personal interview (PI).

http://www.asiapacific.edu/

The most tricky and difficult round that students face before getting admission into top business college is the ‘Personal Interview’ round. We can say that it is the most significant and last key component for selection process by the top B- college. A personal interview is aimed at knowing a candidate more intimately - assessing the clarity of thinking process, future goals and the 'fit' with the B-school. It provides the admission committee of a b-school to evaluate students interpersonal and soft skills. Interview discussions generally involve questions on personal goals, work experience, academics, hobbies and current affairs. During the interview, having clarity of thoughts is far more important than answering these questions. So striking a good balance among the various areas should be the objective of one’s interview preparation. Knowing yourself is the most important part of interview preparation. It is not acceptable if a candidate cannot answer questions based on his/her own personality. It would give an impression of an immature or “self – unaware” person. A candidate hence needs to do a lot of soul searching on questions like: “Why you want to do this course? Strengths and Weaknesses, long term/ short term goals. If a person is working for more than six months then questions on work experience will play a role during interview. The obvious areas of questioning are work profile, projects, organization chart of company and where a person fit in. One should be able to give some examples of team work and leadership from employment. Also if a person is working for less than 2 years then he or / she is still supposed to remember some aspects of their education. One need not to study everything, but should know the basics of all the subjects that they have studied. A good barometer would be curriculum till higher secondary. Ideally, having hobbies can really make interviews quite interesting as they can clearly make a distinction between you and the rest. Not having a hobby is certainly negative; but worse is getting grilled for a cited hobby when you do not have one. General Knowledge can be a really vast topic. Common knowledge like the capital of some countries should be known. On a whole one needs to be systematic regarding their preparation, make a check list of what they do not know and work with it. If one is organized, he or she will definitely perform well in their interview.

An initiative to develop talent in B-Schools.

http://www.asiapacific.edu/

Due to changing demographic patterns, organizations are facing an increase in the number of employees due for retirement and a dwindling number of younger workers available to replace them. Many companies focus on discreet “job skills” that are important for an employee “to do the job”. Hiring and promotion decisions are often based upon those job skills. Even with this focus on discreet and measurable skills, some employees do poorly. What is missing? Skills can be taught, measured and improved, so aren’t they enough? The fact is we all know that it takes more than just the bare essentials to make a successful employee.

There are important critical success factors that are sometimes difficult to define or measure—factors like drive, initiative, attitude, and so on. Many of these less easily defined factors are termed “competencies”. And it is competencies that often have the greatest impact on an employee’s success and promotability. The most successful organizations and leaders who want to raise the bar on talent tend to look beyond job skills and job description to select, develop and challenge their people. They look at competencies which are only earned through business schools. Best B-Schools give their students a greater understanding of what competencies are and how to practice identifying, selecting and using competencies. They will explore how competencies can be used to supplement or improve how they select, manage and develop themselves.
