Campus Placements: The Truth of the Situation.

Many B-schools become lenient toward their admission criteria while admitting students for their PGDM or MBA courses. The logic behind this choice is that the atmosphere at college, the peer group learning, the teachers and the experts will transform the student. Little they realize the truth of an old proverb that ‘you can take a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink it’. Consequentially, these seemingly good B-schools get good companies coming to their campuses but can’t get the 100 percent placement. The biggest huddle is the not the academics but the attitude of the students.

Once admitted to a good MBA college, students start thinking that they are entitled for a wonderful career and hefty pay package without realizing the responsibility they have to shoulder in order to get to this dream of great job. Their attitude toward the course work, assignments and overall learning becomes careless. This not only becomes a cause of degradation in their skill set but it also stops them in learning new things.
As a student one should realize that a MBA college can give you opportunities of learning, growth and a good career in the form of course work, teachers and job interviews. But utilizing those opportunities for your betterment is your responsibilities. The dream jobs even at the best b-schools in India require extra-ordinary efforts. Students have to put in their heart & soul in improving and refining themselves. Very few people get this kind of opportunity of growth and if you are amongst them, please make its full use by your dedication, hard work, sincerity and discipline.

How to crack Personal interview (PI).

http://www.asiapacific.edu/

The most tricky and difficult round that students face before getting admission into top business college is the ‘Personal Interview’ round. We can say that it is the most significant and last key component for selection process by the top B- college. A personal interview is aimed at knowing a candidate more intimately - assessing the clarity of thinking process, future goals and the 'fit' with the B-school. It provides the admission committee of a b-school to evaluate students interpersonal and soft skills. Interview discussions generally involve questions on personal goals, work experience, academics, hobbies and current affairs. During the interview, having clarity of thoughts is far more important than answering these questions. So striking a good balance among the various areas should be the objective of one’s interview preparation. Knowing yourself is the most important part of interview preparation. It is not acceptable if a candidate cannot answer questions based on his/her own personality. It would give an impression of an immature or “self – unaware” person. A candidate hence needs to do a lot of soul searching on questions like: “Why you want to do this course? Strengths and Weaknesses, long term/ short term goals. If a person is working for more than six months then questions on work experience will play a role during interview. The obvious areas of questioning are work profile, projects, organization chart of company and where a person fit in. One should be able to give some examples of team work and leadership from employment. Also if a person is working for less than 2 years then he or / she is still supposed to remember some aspects of their education. One need not to study everything, but should know the basics of all the subjects that they have studied. A good barometer would be curriculum till higher secondary. Ideally, having hobbies can really make interviews quite interesting as they can clearly make a distinction between you and the rest. Not having a hobby is certainly negative; but worse is getting grilled for a cited hobby when you do not have one. General Knowledge can be a really vast topic. Common knowledge like the capital of some countries should be known. On a whole one needs to be systematic regarding their preparation, make a check list of what they do not know and work with it. If one is organized, he or she will definitely perform well in their interview.

Questions to be asked during Interview.

When preparing for the MBA admissions interview, business school applicants often focus on preparing responses to a list of questions they expect from the interviewer, including the unexpected curve balls. However, in many cases, the questions that the MBA candidate asks—typically toward the end of the interview—are equally important and can often be the difference makers that lead to an acceptance letter.  It's a chance for candidates show that, they have made the effort to dig a little deeper, that they care and have a genuine interest in the program and faculty research.

Many B-Schools encourage students to develop a natural relationship with faculty. Therefore, when a  candidate asks about the facilities such as the library, student center, and academic buildings, it leaves a good impression before the interviewers. It provided insight into what the candidate was thinking and what is important to him or her about an MBA education. The key to the questions is quality, not quantity; here are five questions that every candidate should ask:
1. Ask a question based on something you read in a brochure or on the school website
2. Ask the interviewer why he or she decided to become part of the respective school
3. Ask the interviewer about the school or program's greatest asset
4. Ask how the interviewer would describe the school
5. Ask the interviewer what advice he or she would offer

What is Group Discussion?

Group Discussion or GD alongside with Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) has been regarded as one of the most important tools to select candidates for the MBA program. Several B-Schools and Management Institutes conduct GD rounds to test the communication skills of the students. Thus, along with WAT and PI, student should prepare for GD as well.

Group Discussion (GD) is basically a methodology that is used to evaluate a candidate whether he or she has certain personality traits such as clarity of thought, communication including listening skills, ability to critically evaluate and ability to interact in a group. In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the topic, and then asked to discuss the same among themselves for 15-20 minutes. The examiners then evaluate the candidates on the basis of certain parameters, that includes
·        Interactive Skills (how good a student is at communication with other people)
·        Behavior (how open-minded a student is in accepting views contrary to your own)
·        Participation of a student in the GD
·        Contribution to the topic of discussion.
B-school conduct GDs to find out whether candidates possess the qualities that are essential to become an effective manager. The rationale behind this exercise is that when a group of human beings are given a task to accomplish within an unknown and unstructured situation, they will try to accomplish it in a structured way. In this way, they will reveal some of their leadership qualities. Some B-schools organize a case discussion instead of a simple group discussion. A case-study is based on a real-life situation of a person, group, or situation that can be studied over time, and for these types of discussion the candidates need to apply their knowledge to get the best possible solution.
