MBA Selection Process.

The MBA (Master of Business Administration) program has now been regarded as one of the most demanding postgraduate courses in India. Several institutes in India offer this course which covers a vast topic related to Economics, Organizational behavior, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, and Statistics. Each institute having their own selection criteria to admit best from thousands of aspirants who apply each year. Two major and most common criteria for selecting a student is his/her CAT (Common Admission Test) score and their performance in Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI). Over the last couple of years, Group Discussion (GD) is also included as a selection criterion for MBA admission. Candidates are first shortlisted on the basis of the CAT cut-off percentiles. After the shortlist, the candidates are called for WAT- PI rounds con­ducted by each of the Institutes. Apart from CAT score, WAT/GD and PI, some other criteria are also included in the selection criterions which include Past Academic Records, Work Experience, and overall profile. Each criterion is assigned to a particular weight on the basis of which the final merit list is prepared. However, the relevant weight given to any particular criterion varies between different institutes. For instance, the following weighting scheme is more or less common for most of the institutes.

·       Common Admission Test (CAT) score 60%

·       GD/WAT 10%

·       Personal Interview (PI) 20%

·       Academic Performance 10%

While computing the score of the Academic Performance, the marks obtained in Secondary Education, Higher Secondary Education and Graduation shall be taken into account. Finally, Institute will offer admission to the students according to their merits arrived based on the composite score computed considering the above given admission criteria.

Group Discussion(GD): an important part of B-school admission.

Group Discussion or GD is a modern method of assessing students’ personality. It is a widespread tool to judge the worthiness of the student and his suitability for the MBA Course or a job. Group discussion is the integral part of final selection process in B-schools and it helps selectors to evaluate aspirant’s ability to gather their thought on a random topic and analyze the issue with its pros and cons based on facts and logic. It tests students thought leading capabilities, clarity in their argument, ability to articulate and team leading capacity. Management institutes today are very clear about the skills and knowledge that they are looking for in a student while screening. GDs are used to assess certain group skills that cannot be evaluated in a personal interview like ability to reason, to lead, to inspire, flexibility, out-of-the-box thinking, situational handling ability, ability to function as a team player, body language and attitude. It also tests one’s general awareness, team spirit, leadership, confidence, adaptability, communication and listening skills. These skills are very much required to become a successful professional who in turn works as an asset for the B school at time of campus placements. For a person to get rid of the major hurdles during selection process in any B-School, it is important for him/ her to take a stand during the discussion. It is not necessary that you conclude by a positive or a negative viewpoint, but to summarize the discussion well and being neutral gives you an edge over others. The candidates are given a time limit for discussing this topic. Each participant has to give his or her views about this topic. The panelists are there to judge the discussion. After the time limit is over, the best candidate from the group is selected. The same process is followed for other groups. A GD should not proceed to look like a fish market where everyone is trying to drown out the other’s opinion. A successful group discussion should ideally proceed like a well-coordinated football team, where every player passes on the ball to achieve a common goal.
