Time Management Skills for College Students!!

Time Management is what we call life management. At college, students have a great deal of free time, and how they use it can make the difference between a student who struggles and one who succeeds. Also managing your time effectively is never an easy task. As a student, you have many new responsibilities and priorities, all of which compete for your time and attention.  Since we all get the same 24 hours, why is it that some people achieve so much more with their time than others? The answer to this is good time management.

It's important that you develop effective strategies for managing your time to balance the conflicting demands of time for study, leisure, earning money and job hunting.

Planning is the key:  As much as you hate to admit it, making lists of things to do, taking the time to think and plan for the next day, the next week, the next month, is critical in taking control of your own time. Carry a pen and paper or organiser wherever you go. At the simplest level your reminder system could simply be to use your diary to write down the things you need to do, including appointments and deadlines.

Setting Goals: Set yourself specific and clearly defined goals, and make sure that these are realistic and achievable. To do this, you first need to examine your present situation and assess what goals are important to you and what action you need to take to achieve your target.

Prioritizing: It's important to list the tasks you have and to sort these in order of priority, and then to devote most time to the most important tasks. This avoids the natural tendency to concentrate on the simple, easy tasks and to allow too many interruptions to your work.

Avoiding procrastination: Procrastination is one of the things that badly affect the productivity. It can result is wasting essential time and energy. It should be avoided at all costs. It could be a major problem in both your career and your personal life.

Don’t Try To Multi-task: Most of us feel that multitasking is an efficient way of getting things done but the truth is that we do better when we focus and concentrate on one thing. Multitasking hampers productivity and should be avoided to improve time management skills.

Good time management requires an important shift in focus from activities to results: being busy isn’t the same as being effective. Better time management can lead to improved concentration, better overall organization, higher grades and, most importantly, it will reduce your level of stress.  By organizing your time more effectively, you will find the right balance between your leisure, rest and study time. On top of that, you will feel happier.

Tips for In-person interviews for MBA

This is a biggie. I have conducted scores of interviews of Delhi NCR and from other state candidates who have applied for admission to the Asia Pacific Institute of Management, New Delhi, one of the leading b schoolsin Delhi NCR region – both in person and over Skype. You have worked so hard, spent so much time and money giving MAT, getting a good score, and then taking the effort to submit applications to the business schools you are targeting. You prepare day in and day out, do all kinds of research on the school, getting all sorts of insights from online forums, and preparing your speech, answers for possible questions – essentially, leaving no stone unturned to make the best impression you possibly can, put the best foot forward, so to speak. But yet sometimes the results are not favorable. You do all the hard work that is required but miss out on some basic aspects during an interview which drastically affects the outcome of the results. Following are some minor yet important points which need to be considered before you appear for an in-person interview or a Skype interview.
 

1. Don’t be late: inform in advance about the circumstances if beyond your control to the concerned authorities.

2. Dress in business formals: do we go out without a tie for a job interview? Or do we wear casuals for formal events? NO!! Then why not dress properly for B schools interview which is no different from a job interview or a formal event.

3. Have a good body language: Don’t slouch; don’t shake your head and legs randomly while sitting. It shows lack of confidence and a sign of nervousness. Get rid of It.
4. Eye contact during conversation is essential

5. Don’t talk about how smart you are or how intelligent you are in an interview     doesn’t bode well for the outcome.

6. Strike up a conversation and engage the interviewer but don’t force it for the sake of doing so.

7. Please, no crying in an interview

Those Were the Tough days of My Life!!

Being from the non commerce field I was in doubt whether MBA course is relevant to the people like me (non commerce background). Generally it is being said that only BBA/B.COM students go for MBA. Later on I realized that those people have an extra edge over other students as they are familiar with the subjects and the course outline. After doing a lot of research and counseling I got to know that majority of the population in MBA of any B schools are from engineering or non commerce fields. No matter what background are you from, “MBA would transform you life personally and professionally (heard many people saying)”.  After reading the course outline, I was intrigued and interested too which seemed to me a very philosophical subject. I decided to go for it and took admission.

 I thought the class would be easy. Though I attended the first week preparatory classes arranged for non commerce students but believe me everything gone above my head. Subjects like economics, Accounting, Financial Management were like alien to me. On the first day of class one of the professors told us, “This first semester of your life is going to be the worst and the most productive phase of your life.” we were supposed to cover almost ten exclusive subjects including assignments and presentations in three months (as the course was on trimester basis). My entire two years life in MBA revolved around PG, class and library. It was such a rigor course. Not only in first semester rather throughout the course, I had to think deeply about my failures, regrets, role models, motivations and aspirations. It was an exhausting exercise meant to make us aware of why we act the way we do. The end goal was to develop the positive character traits that every successful leader must embody, including integrity, courage, accountability and humanity.

After completing the course, when my Father questioned, “Do you feel transformed yet?” To which I replied: not entirely but I’m grateful to have started the journey.

Campus Placements: The Truth of the Situation.

Many B-schools become lenient toward their admission criteria while admitting students for their PGDM or MBA courses. The logic behind this choice is that the atmosphere at college, the peer group learning, the teachers and the experts will transform the student. Little they realize the truth of an old proverb that ‘you can take a horse to the water but you can’t make him drink it’. Consequentially, these seemingly good B-schools get good companies coming to their campuses but can’t get the 100 percent placement. The biggest huddle is the not the academics but the attitude of the students. 

Once admitted to a good MBA college, students start thinking that they are entitled for a wonderful career and hefty pay package without realizing the responsibility they have to shoulder in order to get to this dream of great job. Their attitude toward the course work, assignments and overall learning becomes careless. This not only becomes a cause of degradation in their skill set but it also stops them in learning new things.

As a student one should realize that a MBA college can give you opportunities of learning, growth and a good career in the form of course work, teachers and job interviews. But utilizing those opportunities for your betterment is your responsibilities. The dream jobs even at the best b-schools in India require extra-ordinary efforts. Students have to put in their heart & soul in improving and refining themselves. Very few people get this kind of opportunity of growth and if you are amongst them, please make its full use by your dedication, hard work, sincerity and discipline.
